From John’s Desk

Posted by Kim McDonald, Category: Announcements, From John's Desk,

Now that graduation Sunday is behind us, now that Memorial Day is at hand and now that school is nearly over, it is time to start thinking about summer plans. While our youth have a full schedule of activities for the summer, I am especially excited about several items are on our calendar for the rest of us and I urge you to start planning for them.

First of all, our Summer Series begins Wednesday June 3. We will have a guest preacher every Wednesday night from various congregations in the Houston area.  This is a great chance for our family to hear different voices and perspectives preach the Word of God. This year we will have some old friends back and plenty of new men to welcome as well. These men will be bringing us lessons from the New Testament designed around our 3rd quarter theme, “Revive our STUDY, O Lord, According to Your Word.”  Please make it your priority to come on Wednesday nights and hear these men preach the Word of God.

August 2-7 we will host our 3rd annual Future Preacher’s Training Camp. Once again, we expect to have 20-25 young men who have an interest in preaching God’s Word. This year we will offer 2 tracks: 1 for our new campers and 1 for our returning young boys. Our theme for the camp is from James 1:22, “Be doers of the Word, and not hearers only.”  In addition to learning how to prepare and deliver a sermon, we will also focus on the ‘pastoral’ work of ministers. The campers will learn about hospital visitation, performing weddings, funerals and other ‘behind the scenes’ work that preachers do. There will be plenty of opportunity for our members to be involved with the camp.  We are going to need help with food preparation and serving, transportation and several other items. More information will be coming by mid-June.

On August 15 we will have our first ever 1 day VBS. There is much excitement about this event as it has been modeled after our highly successful Fall Festival. We are hoping that hundreds of kids from our neighborhood will come and spend a fun filled day with us. During VBS we will be handing out school supplies to our visitors to help them get ready for the new school year and we will also promote tutoring help once school starts. VBS will be a tremendous opportunity for us to serve our community and to help introduce our neighbors to the love of God’s people. There is a bulletin board in the foyer with information and signup sheets so that you can get involved in this great work.

If you haven’t narrowed down vacation plans yet may I suggest you consider attending Polishing the Pulpit August 22-28 in Sevierville, TN? PTP is a weeklong event held at a resort at the foothills of the Smoky Mountains, one of the prettiest places in America. The resort has a waterpark for kids, helicopter rides, a championship golf course and there are many, many other things for any family to do. But the main point of the trip is to attend PTP, where thousands of Christians from all over the country gather to have their faith reenergized and to grow in knowledge of God’s Word.   From breakfast until late at night there are classes, singings and fellowship for preachers, elders, deacons, teachers, youth, children – literally something for everyone all day long. I promise you that if you will attend, your life will be changed! For more information see http://polishingthepulpit.com/.

VBS will offer a preview of things to come. The VBS theme is “God’s Creation – Digging for Answers”.  We hope that VBS will whet the appetite for our seminar September 25-27 with Dr. Brad Harrub entitled “Origins”.  Dr. Harrub is a busy man!  He serves as the Executive Director of Focus Press, is the coeditor of Think magazine and is co-host of the television show “Think About it.” Additionally, he is the author of Convicted: A Scientist Examines the Evidence for Christianity, Heart of the Matter, and Dissecting the Truth and coauthored The Truth About Human Origins and Matters of Life and Death.  Dr. Harrub is one of the most sought after speakers on apologetics and creationism in America. This seminar promises to challenge the way you look at life; how we got here and why we are here.  Mark your calendars now and start inviting guests to join us!

Summer can be a busy time but I hope that you will take advantage of the opportunities we have to grow closer to God and to serve the world around us with the love of God!
