From John’s Desk

The Apostle Paul wrote these amazingly powerful words in praising our God; Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!” (Romans 11:33, NKJV). In this verse, Paul recognizes 3 aspects of God’s greatness: 1) His wisdom, 2) His judgments and 3) His ways. The apostle speaks of God’s knowledge, which Paul says is so deep that it is mysterious. In other words, it is simply too difficult for us to comprehend the wisdom of God because it far surpasses human comprehension. Yet, God’s wisdom is not just a mystery to us, but it is also prosperous for us. God’s wisdom provides us a virtual wealth of information! If you want to become truly rich in life, then dig deeply into God’s Word and soak in His infinite wisdom!
It is also interesting to note that the Greek word translated “wisdom” refers to God’s unlimited understanding of both the physical and spiritual worlds. In other words, when we acquire God’s wisdom, it can help us both in our physical walk and our in our spiritual quest for heaven. We can use the wisdom of God that we find in Scripture to help us in our day to day activities while at the same time we can let Him mold our spirit into the image of His Son. How blessed we are that in every possible way, God’s wisdom enriches us!
Additionally, God’s judgments and decisions are often beyond our understanding as well. Paul says that, for us, they are truly unknowable. Because God is omniscient, because He knows the intent of men’s hearts as well as what the future holds, all of God’s judgements are righteous. We may not always understand His decisions, but we have an unshakable faith that they are completely just and that they are made for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28). His judgments and decisions are always right, because He knows and understands all things.
Thirdly, God’s ways, His paths, are beyond our ability to grasp as well. The Greek word points to the fact that it is simply impossible for us to figure out God’s ways using our own understanding so we need to follow His map. Fortunately, the Bible gives us God’s guidance; it is God’s GPS. When we study it God’s wisdom will show us the way in every aspect in life. We may not always understand it, but we certainly trust Him to lead us. What a blessing it is to have access to our Creator’s wisdom so we can follow His path!
When was the last time you sat down and really considered the greatness of our God as Paul did in Romans 11:33?   When was the last time you thought of how majestic He is? In view of just how amazing Almighty God actually is, doesn’t it make perfect sense that we should spend considerable time devoted to doing nothing but simply praising God! Isaiah wrote, “Have you not known? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in. He brings the princes to nothing; He makes the judges of the earth useless.” (Isaiah 40:21-23).
This Sunday we recognize 7 of our young people who are graduating from high school and moving on to the next phase of their lives. My prayer for all of us, but especially these 7 young men and women, is simply this: No matter what the future holds, make sure you hold tightly to God. Get to know Him on an intimate level and give Him your heart and mind. Feed, literally gorge yourself, on His Word. Pour out your thoughts, concerns, worries and petitions to Him in constant prayer. Spend time every day considering how worthy of praise He is. Then, as Paul did in Romans 11:33, proclaim from the deepest recesses of your being that “Our God is an Awesome God!”
